A tribute to Markos Vamvakaris at the Opening Ceremony of 5th “Beyond Borders” International Documentary Festival of Castellorizo island, Greece
With a special tribute to the “Patriarch of Rebetiko”, Markos Vamvakaris, the 5th “Beyond Borders” International Documentary Festival of Castellorizo, will hold its opening ceremony on Sunday, August 23rd, 2020.
Sofia Papazoglou, the “guru” of this unique music, which has been included in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, will present a tribute concert to Markos Vamvakaris as well as to “our own foreigners” Rosa Eskenazy, Stella Haskil and Marika Ninou. The musicians Spyros Patras (bouzouki), Daso Kourti (accordion), Vassilis Ketentzoglou (guitar) and Nikolaos Gyras (contrabass) will accompany Sofia on stage.
These beloved songs, raised, thrilled and entertained generations of Greeks. Without losing in the slightest their dynamic and essence, are still being sung today by old and young. Sofia Papazoglou introduces them today, in a program designed especially for the needs of the Festival, with her own timbre. Her great music companion brings out the necessary authenticity in consistency with a modern approach.
As part of the tribute, “MARKOS”, a documentary by Nikos Skarentzos, which participated in the official program of the 22nd Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival, will also be screened. The documentary will convey to the idyllic Castellorizo the tradition and sound of Piraeus and Syra.
Α company of musicians travel to Greek island of Syros, the birth place of legendary folk musician Markos Vamvakaris, where they are invited to perform in an homage to his work. Parallel to this journey, all sorts of composers, musicologists, and artists from around the world reveal Markos’ important legacy in the 21st century, and the contemporary soundscape of Europe.
This one-week long Festival, from August 23rd to30th2020, will offer the spectators a chance to celebrate culture and innovative cinematography all the while organizing a multitude of cultural side-events that appeal to island natives and visitors alike.
«Beyond Borders» is organized by the Hellenic History Foundation, in co-organization with Ecrans des Mondes (Paris) and the Society for the Restoration of Megisti, Castellorizo (Sydney), held under the auspices of the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad, of the Municipality of Megisti, and the Embassies of Australia, the U.S. and Israel in Athens. The main sponsors are the Hellenic Parliament, the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Secretariat General for the Aegean and Island Policy, the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad, the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation and EKOME Media.
