Book launch: The Uses of Oppression

A special highlight of the festival was the presentation of The Uses of Oppression by Marina Sakalis (Lady Marks, Harvard University Press). The event was summarized by Festival President Irini Sarioglou and featured insights from Bruce Clark, Matteo Campagnolo, and Sukru Ilitzak.

The book explores the formation and development of the Greek-Ottoman press between 1830 and 1862, shedding light on social aspirations, political concerns, and the Greek-Ottoman community’s engagement with Western models. The presentation provided the audience with a richer understanding of this dynamic and creative period in history, highlighting both its historical significance and the crucial role of archival sources in documenting it.
