Blessings and Vows
by Katerina Zaharia , USA
Blessings and Vows introduces the octogenarian caretaker of a Βyzantine church in southern Greece who, being true to her vow for half a century, has lit a candle daily. This act of piety contributes to her personal sense of identity as much as to the collective identity of the village by asserting the connection to that particular place, keeping alive customs of the village’s forbearers. The short documentary explores the sense of historical continuity sustained by memory, belief, imagination and narrative.
