Night Recedes
by Timon Koulmasis, Greece-France, 2024, 70'
The film Night Recedes traces the fascinating journey of two particularly significant artists: the renowned Greek sculptor Memos Makris (1913–1993) and the multifaceted personality of Zizi Makri (1924–2014). Their lives — among German-occupied Athens, postwar Paris with its vibrant cultural scene, and Cold War-era Budapest — are shaped by art and the history of the 20th century, where hopes and disappointments from both sides of the “Iron Curtain” overlap and shed light on one another.
Through their works and recollections, Night Recedes reexamines the major questions that still resonate deeply within us: utopia and ideology, totalitarianism(s), exile, and freedom.
