“It’s Always Ever About the Conservation of the Species” follows a class of tenth-grade students through their final sex education class before they graduate in the summer. As the curriculum covers foreplay, contraception and partnerships, the lesson gradually fades into the background, replaced by the teenagers’ own voices. They speak with disarming candour about their experiences, fears and desires. Drawing intimate portraits of adolescent social life and inner worlds at the particular threshold between puberty and the end of school, the film keeps a steady eye on a larger question: what should sex education actually achieve today — and where does the school system fall short?

Director: Eva Louisa Gemmer

Eva Gemmer is a Munich-based director, cinematographer and film educator. She has been studying documentary filmmaking at the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF) since 2019. Her work has been screened at several international film festivals, including DOK.fest Munich and the Berlinale. In 2026, she published her first collaborative book project “Was geschehen und nie geschehen ist”. She is currently working on her graduation film “So schlimm hab ich’s mir nicht vorgestellt” produced in collaboration with ZDF’s ‘Kleines Fernsehspiel’, scheduled for release in 2027.
