Why is it that so many young people who seem to have everything often feel empty and desperate? Is depression in this case really a purely biological illness, or does this perspective distract from the societal causes? “Why Are All My Friends Depressed?” searches for answers through conversations, novels, music and TikTok in a world shaped by performance pressure, individualism and the feeling of heading towards an abyss.

Hannah Jandl is a Vienna-born filmmaker studying Documentary Film and Television Journalism at HFF Munich since 2019. Her films have screened at festivals including DOK.fest Munich and Kasseler Dokfest, while her most recent short film was selected for the Berlinale Special programme.

Lea Tama Springer is a Munich-based filmmaker and editor. She is also studying at HFF Munich and has worked in documentary editing for more than a decade. Her films have been screened at festivals including DOK.fest Munich, the Max Ophuls Film Festival and Duisburg Film Week.
