Gyaros: The Story of the Sea
by Mike Bekos, 2026, Greece, 25'
In the new WWF Greece documentary “Gyaros: The Story of the Sea” the island’s history and contemporary revival are recounted from the unique and evocative perspective of the sea itself. Acting as the narrator, the sea takes viewers on a journey from antiquity to the present day, revealing the island’s unique significance as a place of memory and a site of profound historical importance. At the same time, the film highlights the urgent need to protect the environment, particularly the marine ecosystem.
It also showcases WWF Greece’s long-standing work in the region, highlighting initiatives implemented over the past 12 years, and the designation of Gyaros as a Marine Protected Area, a critical milestone made possible by the recent signing of the Presidential Decree. Through striking imagery and personal testimonies, the documentary illuminates the enduring bond between people and nature.
