I didn’t get into Berghain but I did Meet Vica

by Evan Frijters, Netherlands, 2024, 22', International Premiere

Ukrainian Vica flees the trauma of war and seeks refuge in Berlin’s drug-fueled nightlife. But when she realises that Berlin won’t offer the future she longs for, she moves to England in search of solitude. Through intimate phone conversations with the filmmaker, Vica reflects on coming of age and her ongoing search for a sense of home. She slowly comes to terms with the painful truth: she didn’t lose her sense of home only because she left Ukraine, but also because her family ties were fragile—and have grown even weaker since the war. In an attempt to reconnect with her roots, she returns to her hometown of Odesa. But in a country still at war, reality soon begins to unravel her plans.

Director: Evan Frijters

Evan Frijters began his studies at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (HKU) with the ambition of becoming a documentary filmmaker. His first major work, I didn’t get into Berghain but I did Μeet Vica, started with a chance encounter and evolved into a cinematic exploration of the human soul against the backdrop of war in Europe. As a filmmaker, he emphasizes that his strength lies in observing the world around him—his immediate reality—and, through this lens, discovering people or moments that reflect larger, universal stories. This approach of capturing meaningful, everyday experiences has become the cornerstone of his artistic practice.
