The Ghosts of Varosha

The Ghosts of Varosha/ Sweden, 2022, 29’ Directed by: Angelique Kourounis / Greek Premier

In July 1974 Turkey invaded northern Cyprus in response to a Greek Cypriot nationalist coup. One month later the 45,000 Greek Cypriots of Varosha fled their town. After weeks of looting and raids by the Turkish army, the city was surrounded by barbed wire and became a ghost city and prohibited to all. In October 2019 the Turkish president, Recep Tayip Erdogan despite international condemnations breaks the negotiations for the reunification of the divided island and opens Varosha for tourists. For the first time after 47 years the Greek Cypriot refugees of Varosha can walk in their city.
