For its 8th edition and for the third consecutive year, the International Documentary Film Festival of Castellorizo "Beyond Borders" has the pleasure and honor of being under the most honorable state patronage of the Hellenic Republic, that of H.E. of the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou. This patronage for another year is the most suitable recognition of the ever greater development of the Festival, which in its 8 years of holding has managed to become one of the most important domestic film festivals, while at the same time being recognized as one of the most up-and-coming documentary film festivals in Europe thanks to the international bridges of support by its film and television industry collaborators.
The 8th edition of "Beyond Borders" will be a tribute to the 100 years since 1923 and the compulsory exchange of populations, during which tens of thousands of people on both sides of the borders were uprooted from their lands and faced with the legacy of an unhealed trauma. A trauma that was destined to shape the Greek history and historiography of the 20th century, as well as a trauma that was an explicit or implicit central theme of the Greek cinema of the last several decades.
In the above context, the 8th poster of "Beyond Borders" is inspired by the free and associative experimental technique of collage and has at its center the personal experience of expatriation. An experience, however, that despite suffering and adversities does not stop believing in better days to come, a hint of optimism and humanity. The organization of the Festival owes special thanks to Maria Bourou for the donation of the photo’s rights, from her family archive, of Dimitrios Tsouros, who is pictured in his childhood during the process of his family's emigration from Eritrea (Cesme) in Asia Minor in 1922.
Keeping as a project the stories of the people who sealed the course of History, the 8th edition of "Beyond Borders" is being prepared for the biggest film festival in Greece, in the summer of 2023 from August 20 to 27.
The Festival is under the auspices of H.E. of the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou. The organization belongs to the Hellenic History Foundation (IDISME), in collaboration with Ecrans des Mondes (Paris).
