"Beyond the Borders" was instituted in 2016 by the Hellenic Foundation for Historical Studies (IDISME) with the support of Ecrans des Mondes (Paris) and is based in the remote Kastellorizo. "Beyond the Borders" will screen Greek, European and world-wide productions of the last five years. Along with the screenings, a variety of cultural events will follow in Kastellorizo. The Festival reflects the importance of the study and recording of historical events worldwide, with a view to understanding the challenges, opportunities and dangers of political and socio-economic development. Promoting the value of historical research, the Festival is aimed at creators of historical and socio-political documentaries around the world to submit their films..

The films of the competition are evaluated by an International Jury. This year, the award-winning Australian documentary filmmaker Nick Torrence has taken over as chairman of the commission. The Commission awards two prizes: Best Historical Documentary and Best Socio-Political Documentary. The awards are courtesy of the Greek Parliament. Each screening is followed by a Q&A with the director or an expert on the film. The entrance is free.
Under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Municipality of Megisti and with the support of the South Aegean Region and the General Secretariat of the Aegean and Island Policy, as well as prominent businessmen and media, the Festival is a true celebration of culture on the Aegean. Finally, the Festival awards each year two special collaborators, the Honored Media and the Honored Academic Foundation, to honor their contribution to the values advocated by the Festival. The Festival seeks collaborations with Institutions, Festivals and institutions from all over the world of corresponding historical and geopolitical themes.
