Beyond Borders traveled to Istanbul 2025
With great success and warm public response, the two-day screening program of Beyond Borders – Kastellorizo International Documentary Festival concluded at the Istanbul Sinematek on September 20–21, 2025.
For the second consecutive year, the festival traveled to Turkey, presenting a selection of award-winning films from its 9th edition, in collaboration with the Istanbul Cinematheque. The program featured screenings of international productions, discussions with filmmakers, and open dialogue with the audience, offering viewers in the neighboring country the chance to discover works celebrated for their artistic merit, social awareness and ability to shed light on lesser-known aspects of history.
In her opening remarks, the festival’s President and Artistic Director, Dr. Irini Sarioglou, emphasized the significance of this initiative, noting that: “Beyond Borders is a festival that travels, building bridges of culture and understanding among different peoples, mindsets, and identities. It strives for equality both inside and outside the screening hall.”
A highlight of the two-day event was the screening of the multi-award-winning documentary I Shall Not Hate (Bronze Megisti Wreath Award) by Tal Barda, attended by the former Prime Minister of Turkey, Ahmet Davutoğlu. In his remarks following the screening, Mr. Davutoğlu stressed:
“It is inconceivable that the daily bombing of Gaza has continued for two years, with civilian victims. It is our collective duty to stand against this injustice and work together to put an end to it.”
The evening also featured a live call with the film’s Palestinian protagonist, Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, who, visibly moved, once again thanked the organizers and the Turkish audience for their heartfelt participation.
The screenings were attended by diplomats, members of the press, Istanbul’s Deputy Mayor for Culture and a large number of viewers who filled the auditorium and engaged actively in the event’s discussions.
Beyond Borders continues to represent Greece internationally, showcasing films that highlight human rights, historical memory, and global peace, while serving as a meeting point for culture, dialogue, and artistic expression.
Organizers: Hellenic History Foundation (IDISME) in collaboration with Ecrans des Mondes (France).
